Preparing for Christmas. . . .

Dad's hair was growing in nicely and then the full head Radiation caused it to start falling out again. In preparation for the family Christmas Party, he had a meeting with the razor!!!

Kevin had to help out as Connie didn't know what she was doing with a razor and shaving cream on the head!!! After looking in the mirror, Dad said, "I look like Eric" (his nephew with the same hair cut).
Due to severe hip pain, he has not been sleeping well at night. The doctors said he could only take a baby aspirin, which obviously didn't help much. Mom was able to convinced the doctor that Dad needed relief. Way to go Momma Bear!!!! He now has a prescription for a pain medicine which helps. It is a low dose of a addictive narcotic that makes him too sleepy, therefore, he will only be taking it when absolutely necessary. His hip is so bad that he has to use his walker even in the house. Dad has had significant hearing loss since December 1. Mom has been patient and is taking great care of her guy.
Other than the pain, he is doing well - last night he said he was feeling pretty good. He has been snuggled up at home in his chair watching the snow pile up!! He is planning to go to the doctor on Friday and to the Family Christmas Party on Saturday. Thank you, God, for every day that we have with this wonderful man!!! It will be a Blessed Christmas in our family - thank you for uplifting us in prayer.

Radiation Treatments complete.....

Dad had his 10th Radiation Treatment today. This completes the radiation treatments to the brain for now. He is scheduled for "possible" GAMMA Knife procedure on Wednesday, January 14, 2009. On that day, an MRI will determine if the radiation treatments reduced the tumors enough to qualify him for the GAMMA Knife procedure. It will take 5-7 hours for the entire process, he will come home that day with little to no side effects. The wind chill is bitter today - it is a blessing that he is finished with this round of treatment so that he doesn't have to go out in the cold each day.

His dosage of medicine (Steroids) that reduce the swelling of the brain will be gradually decreased over the next couple week - we must look for neurological changes as the medicine is changed.

Specific prayer requests:

  • Radiation does it's job and reduces the size of the tumors

  • that Dad will qualify for GAMMA Knife

  • no neurological changes (such as seizers, blurred vision, slurred speech, dizziness, etc)

  • Dad really needs a MIRACLE --- continued healing, strength & freedom from the Cancer

Thank you for your prayers, love and support ..... Bless you all.

Homecoming!

Dad is back home, all snug in his comfy chair. His homecoming was pretty uneventful, which is a blessing since there's so much snow outside and the roads are very slippery. He's relaxing and chatting on the phone. It seems like he likes being home with his bride again. We are still praying for continued progress and safe travels to radiation each day. He finished his sixth radiation treatment this morning and should be finished on Monday.

A Healing Touch

This is very touching......

Great-Granddaughter, Kaya places a bandaid on Bumpa's forehead, gave him her blanket and said "this will make you better"!!!

She didn't let him keep the blanket long but the bandaid stayed on all afternoon!!!!
Dad is gaining strength each day.....here's a few more pictures of Dad spending time with his family......

Today was a VERY good Day . . .

Niece Teresa spends time Loving on Uncle Bob
&
Grandpa snuggles with his girl Lindsey

This was a very GOOD Day - Dad walked up and down a full flight of stairs - Ate three full meals without assistance - No visible seizures - Received Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy with great success - Received the 4th Radiation Treatment - spent the entire day chatting with friends and family.

The only explanation .... GOD IS GREAT!!!!

Thankful for every moment of every day . . .

This picture is of a proud man
and his four sons
Tim, Jeff, Mike and Shawn

Dad's children are gathering around him - by this weekend he will have all seven of his children by his side. He had a very good day. With medication and answered prayer, the swelling in his brain is reduced and his ability to recall past events was amazing today. He is speaking clearly and can carry on a pretty good conversation with small amounts of confusion. Eating better than he has for months. He received his third radiation treatment today. He had one seizure tonight at dinner time. The IV is out, he is getting up and moving around with assistance and will be going home within the next couple days. He loves to be home and he loves being with his family. Please pray for a miracle - this job is TOO big for man or medicine -it is a "God-size" job and God is able. We are thankful for the wonderful prayer support, the meals, the visits, phone calls and love that our family is feeling from all our friends and family. God Bless you all.

What a difference a day makes . . .

Wow - take a look at that cute face!!! Dad took a walk down the hall with the help of a physical and occupational therapist. He then sat up in the chair for quite a while today. He started eating last night and is eating well as his swallow study went great. He had an EEG this morning and radiation this afternoon. His communication skills and ability to process information changes from hour to hour - he often surprises us with complete clear sentences that make total sense - other times he gets stuck on a word or sentence and repeats it many times. In his mind, he is at Dow working today and a machine is down so we are playing along to help keep his frustration at a minimum. He was really into numbers yesterday and really into spelling today. Not a lot of seizure activity was visible this morning but the tech could see it on the EEG. We are getting new information all the time and it is clear that they are preparing Dad to return to his comfortable chair at home soon. A lot of support services will be needed in order to make that happen.

Thank you for praying - we definitely can feel the hand of God on this situation. God is in control and knows the future. Bless you for lifting up our family in your prayers.

Change in treatment plan

After further review of the images taken on Monday, the plan for treatment has been changed. There are at least 5 tumors with other small spots. Overall head Radiation has been started so that all areas can be treated that would possibly get missed with GAMMA Knife. GAMMA Knife may be an option in the future. His seizures increased last night. His spirits are up and he is happy when he sees people that love him. His vital signs are very good. He ate a little last evening and took sips of liquid.

Please pray for wisdom for the doctors and the family as many decisions have to be made. Also, please pray for Mom - that she will get the rest she needs and that she takes good care of her own health - four of Dad's children will be traveling home in the days ahead - pray for safety and peace. Bless you all.

Update: Monday evening

The episode of cluster seizures followed by weakening and affected speech has been diagnosed as Todd's Syndrome.

The contrast tests revealed three tumors in his brain approximately two cm each. The neurosurgeon recommends the Gamma Knife procedure to treat the tumors. This procedure has a 90% success rate and rare side effects. Dad is scheduled to have this performed on Wednesday.

Tomorrow they will do a swallow study to see if he can start to eat and drink. Tonight he is resting comfortably and appreciating your prayers.

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST

At approximately 1:00 a.m. this morning, Dad fell in the living room. Mom called 9-1-1 and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital - he was unresponsive upon arrival and was having seizures. Initial tests show that the cancer has entered his brain. Additional tests have been taken with a contrast to give a better look at his brain and we will know more later today. He has been admitted to the hospital. He is responding more and more as time goes by. He is trying very hard to speak and appears to understand what we are saying to him. Please pray for wisdom for the doctors, peace for the family and travel safety for family members trying to get home. Thank you all for your love and support and we will try to keep this blog updated.

Bumpa's New Hair Growth . . .

His hair is growing back in and he may need a haircut soon . . .

Many have told him that when his hair grows back that it will possibly be a different texture, maybe even curly - it often grows in darker than your original hair - but this is CRAZY.
It's GREAT to see him SMILE!!!

Thank you, Troy (Grandson) for the great picture and to Levi (Great-Grandson) for the Hair Enhancement!!!

Meeting with the Radiologist

Dad saw Dr. Mehta (Radiologist) this afternoon. The report was similar to what Dr. Danso said yesterday. There was conflicting information on the written report regarding the CT Scan.
Dr. Mehta said that he would have liked to see more shrinkage but at least there was not a significant increase in the size or additional tumors. The past chemo and radiation treatments received will continue to work in the months ahead. He will not have any more radiation treatments - if treatment is given in the future, it will be Chemo but not at this time.

Wait and See - Dad will see Dr. Mehta in 6 months and Dr. Danso in 3 months.

Dad's job right now is to ...
  • regain strength & stamina by trying to walk a little each day
  • gain a little weight (by the way, the weight lost didn't appear as bad at Mehta's office ..... different scales ..... different readings... they report a 10 pounds loss since July - he weighed 153.4 today)

eat, eat, eat as much (high calorie/fortified foods) as he can to build up his strength and weight

Time will tell - continued prayer is needed. Bless you all.

CT Scan results discussed with Oncologist

After a little breakfast at Bob Evans, Dad saw
Dr. Danso (Oncologist) to review the results of the CT Scan taken last week. The images were compared to the PET CT, CT Chest and lung biopsy taken in April.

The tumor on his left lung measures approximately 5.8 cm by 7 cm by 7.6 cm. Since April, these overall dimensions of the tumor appear questionably increased, although measurements may not be exact since the lung has developed a large left pleural effusion (entrapped fluid) - this makes direct comparison somewhat difficult.

The radiation treatment causes scar tissue to form in the lung and around the tumor cutting off the blood supply to the cancer - if the cancer does not have blood to feed it, it will liquefy and die. It is difficult at this point to determine if the treatment was effective since the tumor did not decrease in size. There is currently a "cavity" measuring approximately the same size as it was in April but does it contain cancer???? An x-ray will be taken in 3 months to see if there is a change.

Dad is coughing a lot so he was given a prescription for a cough suppressant. If the fluid on his lungs increase, they will have to removed it by needle. Dad's feet are numb from the chemo which explains the carpet burn on his forehead and nose - he took a tumble in the night on Saturday.

Dad weighed 147 lbs today which is a 28 pound loss since April. He doesn't have much of an appetite - Dr. does not want to have to give him medication to stimulate his appetite. Mom and Dad received his third supply of BOOST and he will begin using that on a daily basis.

PRAISES:
  • One lymph node measures 9-10 mm and is stable. The other lymph nodes previously discussed on the CT scan of 4/11/08 do not appear to be present at this time
  • No other masses or nodules are identified
  • The right lung is clear

Dad has an appointment tomorrow at 2:30 with Dr. Mehta (Radiologist). Possibly there will be further discussion and explanation of the findings. An update will be posted after that appointment. Thank you for your continued prayer.

Keeping each other warm ......

Grandpa and Lindsey try to warm each other up after a busy day at the hospital. They both had tests and are waiting for the results.

Dad had a CT Scan that should indicate whether the past 6 months of treatment were effective. With two appointments next week (with the Oncologist and Radiologist), we should find out whether the tumor has been reduced and what the next step will be..... Dad had an elevated temperature and had the chills - with many errands completed, he was ready to return to his comfortable electric blanket. Please pray as we wait for results.

Feeling Better Every Day ...

Dad is feeling pretty good - he was able to spend a little time outside picking up leaves this week. Thank you to his sweet neighbor who came over and picked up a lot of leaves for him. What a blessing!!!

The last two days, Dad has spend his time at Shawn's new house....spending time with the boys as they help Shawn build a new home for his family. Dad enjoys being with the guys and watching the progress. Thank you for your prayers as Dad regains strength every day.

Update on Dad.....Amazing God .... How can it be.....

On Sunday, Dad and Mom were able to take a day trip to southern Michigan to deliver Tim to his new job. They also had an opportunity to visit with Mom's sister, Stella. Thank you God that Dad is feeling good enough to make the trip.

On Monday, Dad pulled vines out of the garden to prepare for winter. He emptied the dishwasher and did a little laundry.

Today he went to town to visit friends, ran errands and had his blood retested. His White Blood count and Hemoglobin are below the desired levels. His Red Blood Count and Platelets are within the acceptable range.

It is because you went to God on his behalf that Dad is doing well!!! THANK YOU

A significant difference........

Since his Blood Transfusion, Dad is doing much better - He was able to get outside today. He gathered up and drained the garden hoses and placed them in the barn for winter storage - Thank you, Tim, for helping Dad prepare for winter.

Dad also was able to go to Shawn's new house for a while to check out the progress. His feet and hands are still numb but his energy level is significantly improved.

Thank You for your continued prayer - God is GREAT!!!

Transfusion Complete and He's Back Home in his Chair ! ! !

Dad's blood transfusion when well today. He received 2 bags of Red Blood Cells. The first bag was VERY sloooooooow. The nurses were kind and patient as they really had to monitor and adjust his arm and needle to get the blood to flow. The second bag went much better. He was in the Infusion Center from 8:00 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. today. They fed him lunch, he watched his own private little TV (which as you can imagine made him happy) while he napped.

There is a little family debate about whether Dad truly has a head cold or whether it is seasonal allergies - this morning his summation was that he had a "snotty nose". Thank you for your prayers in this matter - God knows which it is and we can still ask him to protect Dad from infection. We appreciate your continued prayers and support.
Hey - Brother Jeff - check out the sweatshirt!!!

We'll give an update in a couple of days as to whether this transfusion helps. Bless you.

In Need of a Blood Transfusion and Prayer ! ! !

Dad will be receiving a Blood Transfusion tomorrow (Thursday, October 2). His blood test results were low. His Hemoglobin and Red Blood Counts are at their lowest point since he started his treatment. He will be going at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow and it will take approximately 5-6 hours.

He also has a head cold - please pray for a complete recovery - he does not need to get a cold in his chest or get an infection. He is not feeling well at all. He has been feeling poorly since Saturday. The side effects of the last Chemo have been difficult. His bones and muscles hurt, he is dizzy at times, sleepy and just doesn't feel well.

Please pray with us for the following...
  • that the transfusion will go well tomorrow and that it will help boost his system
  • his cold will clear up and not become more serious

Thank you and May God Bless.

Meeting with the Oncologist and Third Chemo Treatment

Dad had a visit with Dr. Danso (Oncologist) and received his third full Chemo treatment today. This is the last one (hopefully). His blood count is fairly good (at least the numbers were high enough to receive Chemo). His Red Blood Count and Hemoglobin are on the low side - these numbers should rise now that he has finished his Chemo. One of the side effects of the Chemo is Neuropathy (numbness of hands and feet). It was recommended that Dad take L-Glutamine over the next 4 days to help with this.

What's next?
- CT Scan on November 3
- Return visit to Oncologist (Dr. Danso) November 12 11:30 am
- Return visit to Radiologist (Mehta) on November 13 2:30 am

In November, we will know whether the treatment has been successful.

Specific Prayer Requests:
- Symptoms of this Chemo treatment will be minimal
- Regain strength - physically - specifically his lungs
- Maintain good nutrition and weight will remain stable
- Blood count will rise to a normal level
- Positive news in November following 6 months of treatment

Thank you for your love and support - We will keep you up-to-date on his progress
God has blessed our family.

A Special Day at Church for Dad.......

A special service was held today at the Floyd Church of God..... for the past few years, the Floyd Church family has held an "outdoor" church service in September - this year they had camping, bonfires, worship and preaching, lots of food and great fellowship. A new sign and lighthouse in front of their place of worship was dedicated this morning.

This year was extra special for our family. Although we didn't take part in the camping, we did enjoy the Sunday Worship and Picnic gathering. During the morning worship service, Eric (Bob's nephew) dedicated a beautiful gospel song to his "Uncle Bob". It is one of Dad's favorite songs right now and it goes like this...

I thought that number one—would surely be me
I thought I would be—what I wanted to be
I thought I would build—on life`s sinking sand
But I can`t even walk
Without you holding my hand

I thought that I could—do a lot on my own
I thought I could make it—all alone
I thought of myself—as a mighty strong man
But I can`t even walk
Without you holding my hand

Chorus
Lord, I can`t even walk
Without you holding my hand
The mountains too high
And the valley`s too wide
I`m down on my knees—I learned to stand
Because I can`t even walk
Without you holding my hand

I think that I`ll make---Jesus my own
From now on—when I`m in trouble
On Him –I`ll call
If I don`t trust Him—I`d be less than a man
Because I can`t even walk
Without you holding my hand

We were all blessed by the beautiful song that Eric sang....Despite the VERY cold weather - it was a Special Day for Dad. Here are a few pictures of the event. Hope you enjoy.

Great News from Dr. Tekchandani ! ! !

In June of this year, Dr. Anita Tekchandani, M.D. (Urologist) saw a red spot on Dad's Bladder and as a result, scheduled a bladder biopsy for this coming Monday (9/22). In preparation for the biopsy, Dad had an appointment this afternoon with Dr. Tekchandani.

After discussing Dad's current Chemo treatment, symptoms and reviewing his blood work - Dr. Tekchandani decided to take another look at his bladder by scoping in the office. The "red spot" is GONE. His bladder looks good, he currently is not experiencing difficulty with his bladder, therefore..........The Biopsy will be cancelled!! Dad will have a return visit to Dr. Tekchandani in January.

Based on the above decision, next week will be a bit easier for Dad - He will receive a full dose of Chemo on Wednesday, Sept 24. Thank you for your continued prayers for Dad - He is a trooper - the symptoms have not been fun but he is hanging in there!!! God is hearing your prayers. Praise HIM!!!

Dr. Tekchandani: Thank you for taking such good care of Dad - You have monitored him closely since the onset of his original bladder cancer in 2000. Not only have you provided outstanding medical care but have always been a wonderful support to both Mom and Dad throughout Dad's treatment. We are touched that you take the time to be a regular visitor of this blog in order to stay current on Dad's progress. Bless you for your thorough medical care and your tender spirit. You are a blessing to our family.

Oxygen........

Dad had an appointment yesterday with Visiting Nurses to take a test regarding a "portable" Oxygen Tank. He was able to get everything ironed out with his Oxygen supply. He now has a very adequate portable device to use when going outside the house. Also, a longer tube was obtained so that the large machine producing the oxygen can stay in the back of the house allowing him to move throughout the entire house. This makes for better mobility and the opportunity to leave the oxygen on more of the time. The machines makes some noise - so there's new sounds and equipment to get used to......Thank You God that Dad is getting adequate oxygen.

Dad says he's doing "so-so"

He's not a complainer and definately not a hypochondriac. Currently, he is dealing with symptoms of his Chemo treatment received last Wednesday. His hands and feet are aching, mostly his knuckles - he is VERY sleepy. He's cold all the time and wraps up in a blanket every chance he gets. Nothing really tastes good to him so it's not fun to eat......It took a lot to get that much info from him as he is not one to feel sorry for himself. Pretty much the same symptoms as last treatment.

He was able to go to Church this morning. He said there were a few ladies that rubbed his bald head....most of them were his nieces!!!! They enjoyed loving on Uncle Bob. Praise God that Dad is able to join together with other believers and worship his Lord.

Please continue to lift Dad up in your prayers - Bless you all!

Meeting with Dr. Danso today - Second "Full" Chemo

Dad's meeting with the Oncologist (Dr. Danso) went well today - discussing his treatment side effects, his lack of oxygen and his new haircut. Dad's lab work was at an acceptable level that allowed him to receive his second dose of full Chemo. The treatment went well with no difficulties.

Dad's blood oxygen was monitored while he took a walk with the nurse and as suspected he qualified to receive oxygen. Everything is being arranged through Visiting Nurses to have an oxygen supply at home and also a small tank to carry with him when he goes outside....to the mailbox... to the grocery store, etc. This is going to help him feel better when he has difficulty breathing. He will also sleep with the oxygen which should help with his fatigue during the day.

Dad lost weight over that past few weeks so Mom arranged to get a large supply of "BOOST", a diet supplement to help him maintain his weight.

Please pray for Dad over the next couple weeks as he deals with the symptoms of this second treatment. Chemo is tough stuff!!!!! Thank you, God, for sustaining Dad and bringing him this far. Thank you, Friends and Family, for lifting Dad up to God in your prayers. Bless you all.

To His Disappointment....the Hair Must GO!!!

Dad's hair was falling out in clumps......so it was time to shave it off. He would prefer to have a full head of hair.....
He was reminded that
"the Hair doesn't make the Man".

Lindsey reassures Grandpa that she still likes to rub his head even if his hair is gone!

His reaction when he first looked in the
mirror was......in a LOUD voice ......
"HOLY CRAP"
Not too spiritual but his response could have been worse!

We assured him that he has a nice head - not too many bumps - nice shape - besides........

Who needs hair with a face like that!!!

Please pray for strength and encouragement

Dad is dragging.... very tired.... can't get the air he needs - it has been difficult to do small tasks like... going to the mailbox. He is sleeping a lot. Seems more discouraged and doesn't feel as good as he would like. If you could please pray specifically for physical strength, good nutrition, and adequate lung function so that he can feel better. This is a tough time and we solicit your prayers. Thank you and God Bless you all.

Bob is a SLEEPY man........but doing well.....

Dad is doing well but is VERY SLEEPY.....he is sleeping a lot which is common while on Chemo. His blood work looked better today.

  • White Blood count went up significantly since last week - the reference range is 4.8 to 10.8.... last week it was only 2.6 and this week it is 11.9 - Praise God!!! Infection (fever) is always a concern when the white blood count is so low. Our prayers have been answered.
  • Platelets doubled since last week and are now within the reference range.
  • Hemoglobin remains low - he will receive a shot next week if they are below 10 - He is currently at 10.9
  • Red Blood count is within the reference range.
Praise God for the good report today!!!

If Dad continues to do well, he will receive his second "full" dose of Chemo next Wednesday (September 3).

In between naps, Dad has spent a significant amount of time with Shawn and Tim over the past couple weeks as Shawn is building a new home for his family. Dad loves helping his son and there is nothing better than a building project!!!! We are thankful that he feels good enough to go to the building site and be part of the project.

Thank you for your continued prayers for strength and healing as Dad faces this challenge.

Side Effects of Chemo have improved!!

One week since the "BIG" Chemo treatment!! Dad is feeling better than he did on the week-end. The symptoms that he was experiencing from the Chemo have improved and he is doing well. He had his blood work done this morning. Numbers were down .... we checked with the nurse to see if there was something he could do to build them back up..... she said that they are not at a dangerous level, there isn't anything he can do to bring them up - they should come back up on their own - just need to watch for fever (infection). He looks good and seems to be tolerating the treatments!!

Thank you, Almighty God, for your hand of mercy!!!

A few side effects from Chemo......

Dad is having a few side effects from the Chemo - He has bone pain especially in his hands and feet. He is able to eat but having a few stomach problems. He sounds great and remains positive. He says at this point that it isn't more than he can handle and is willing to fight through it to get the three treatments completed. Please continue to pray as he works through these symptoms. Keep on Fighting Dad and Stay Strong!!! We love you

"Full" Dose of Chemo Received

On Tuesday, August 12, Dad received a "Full" dose of Chemo. It took approximately 5 hours to administer through IV. His body received the drugs without difficulties. The list of possible side effects are many and can be severe. Please pray for Dad over the next couple weeks, specifically for the following:
  • Some of the major side effects may be bone and muscle pain, fever, nausea, diarrhea, severe fatigue - please pray that the symptoms will be minimal.
  • Dad was not smiling yesterday.... after 2 happy events (2 grandson's weddings) he had to come home and face a major treatment - please pray for encouragement - emotionally, spiritually and physically.
  • If Dad is not able to tolerate this treatment size, they will reduce the dose next time - please pray that he is able to communicate his side effects so that he can get help with the symptoms and that his future treatments can to motified appropriately.
  • Pray that Dad's White and Red Blood Cell, Hemoglobin and Platelet Count stay within the acceptable range so that he does not get infection and that his treatment can proceed as planned.

The Plan...

  • On Wednesday, September 3 - he will received his second full dose of Chemo
  • This Chemo Plan is .... 3 Treatments / 3 weeks between each dose.
  • September 22 - a bladder biopsy will be taken at the hospital (day surgery) - a red spot was seen by Dr. Tekchandani and she wants to be sure his bladder cancer has not returned.

God has placed His hand on Dad through this entire process. Please continue to pray for Dad that he is able to tolerate the treatment and that his spirit remains positive. Mom and Dad enjoy the comments on this blog and other forms of encouragement will certainly help them through the weeks ahead. God Bless You All.

A Time to Celebrate as he waits for next appointment......

Another exciting trip....another beautiful wedding.......a new beautiful Granddaughter added to the family.....

On Friday, August 8, Dad took a slow boat ride across Lake Michigan on the S.S. Badger to Wisconsin. The purpose of the trip was to attend the wedding of his grandson Ryan. Praise God that Dad was strong, healthy and feeling well enough to travel and attend the wedding.

Dad will be visiting the Oncologist tomorrow (Tuesday, August 12) and possibly receiving his first "full" dose of Chemo..... An update will be posted tomorrow after his appointment....... in the meantime, sit back and enjoy the following two slide shows of Dad's Trip and Ryan's Wedding.

Last Week of Treatment then a short break....

This is Dad's last week of treatment for a while. On Tuesday, when he received his Chemo, he also received meds to boost his Red Blood Count as they had dropped below the recommended level. He will have a break until at least August 12 when he meets with the Oncologist (Dr. Danso). Grandpa and Tyler with their brides!

Here is a picture of Mom and Dad at their grandson's (Tyler) wedding. Tyler married Jackie this weekend and it was a sweet event. It was an answer to prayer and a blessing that Dad felt well enough to attend this union. They have welcomed their new granddaughter with open arms and are excited for their next adventure together. Congrats Tyler and Jackie!

Quick Visit with the Radiologist

Today was Dad's 31st Radiation Treatment (the 3rd treatment after the field was refined to a smaller area). Dr. Mehta (Radiologist) also quickly spoke with Dad regarding the non-diagnostic CT Scan that was performed on July 7. The tumor is shrinking ! ! ! By approximately 10-30%. Praise God for this answer to prayer. Dr. said that typically the tumor will continue to shrink even after the Radiation stops.

The following shows Dad's upcoming treatment plans...
  • 2 more Radiation Treatments this week (Tuesday 7/15 & Wednesday 7/16)
  • 2 day break so that Dad can go to Tyler's Wedding (Thurs 7/17 & Friday 7/18)
  • Radiation Every Day next week (July 21, 22, 23, 24 & 25)

This will complete the 10 Treatments in the Refined Field

  • Chemo-Lite - Tomorrow - Tuesday 7/15
  • Chemo-Lite - Tuesday 7/22

It is understood that he will have a 2 week rest from treatment and then get 3 "Full" Chemo Treatments - not just "Chemo-Lite" This is a treatment that he has not yet received. Please pray for strength and endurance as he receives these 3 treatments. He would like to be well enough to attend Ryan's wedding on Aug 9.

Thank you for your prayers - the treatments are reducing the size of the tumor and Dad is doing well. We know that it has been the power of prayer and God's grace and mercy.

Praise HIM ! ! !

Dad's 4th of July Celebration

Dad enjoys pool-side time with Shawn and newest member of his family - Molly (Shawn & Becky's one-month old daughter). We have much to celebrate ! ! !

Appointment with Dr. Danso (Oncologist)

Dad had his third appointment with Dr. Danso (Oncologist) today. There was a bit of confusion as to his treatment plan. Yesterday, July 7, Dad had a non-diagnostic CT Scan in Dr. Mehta's office. The results should be explained to Dad on Monday morning (July 14). At that time, hopefully, we will have a better understanding of when Radiation will end - When they are done with Radiation, Dad will receive 3 doses of Full Chemo (1 every week for 3 weeks) This will be stronger than the "Chemo-Light" that he has been receiving.

Tomorrow (7/9) Dad will return to Radiation to have the area on his chest re-marked to line up with the CT Scan results and his Radiation will resume on Thursday 7/10 - Since Dad did not receive Radiation today or will not tomorrow, he did not receive Chemo today. Hopefully, by the beginning of next week, everyone will have a better understanding of the treatment plan.

Please pray for perseverance, patience with the confusion between Radiology and Oncology and that Dad continues to stay healthy. He is doing well - Thank you so much for your prayers.

Sixth Week of Chemo and Radiation

Dad completed his 6th Chemo treatment today. He will have 3 more days of radiation this week and then he will have a break!!! He will not have Chemo or Radiation next week (week of June 30).

On July 7 at 2:00 p.m. he will have a CT Scan in Dr. Mehta's office (non-diagnostic) and on that day he will have a "BOOST" treatment of Radiation - the treatment will be focused into a smaller area (field) - not greater intensity but a smaller area for a little longer period of time.

On July 8, Dad has an appointment with Dr. Danso (Oncologist) to get a new treatment schedule.

Dad's lab numbers were slightly lower but within an acceptable range.

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. Dad has tolerated treatment well with very few side effects. His attitude remains positive and he is still determined to continue with the treatment.

Mom and Dad are planning to travel to Illinois in mid-July for Tyler's Wedding (Grandson). Dad is feeling strong enough to make the trip and the Radiation Nurse said that they can plan his treatment around the trip. She felt it was important for Dad to attend this exciting family event. Mom and Dad are both looking forward to the wedding. Praise God that everything is going well. Please pray that the treatments are effective and that the side effects are minimal. Our God is GREAT!!!!

Week Five!

Yesterday, Dad completed week five of Chemo. His lab work showed that his numbers were a little lower than last week, but acceptable. He continues to have radiation each week day. Today (6/18/08) he went to the Oncologist. Dr. Tekchandani performed a scope of his bladder which she has been doing routinely. She saw a red spot in his bladder and will biopsy it in September.

A side note: For Father's day... Dad was surprised by Lynette and Teresa with an unexpected visit mid-week. That was a fun treat to see them and have dinner together. Saturday, he had a bonfire and hung out with some grand kids and kids. He opened gifts, watched a memories slide show, had dinner and seemed to enjoy every moment of it.

Endurance.........

Dad is still feeling well with minimal symptoms (pretty good for his 4th week of treatments). He is tired and when he does have a typical symptom, it seems to clear up quickly. Today was a full day. Dad said it best, "I just have to hurry up so I can wait". Here is a sample of his day - labs, wait, Dr. visit, wait, chemo, wait, radiation..... it was really something. And to think that during all of that he had a smile on his face. He saw Dr. Danso today, there are no changes in his treatment plan, but his lab numbers were good. He is holding steady on most of his numbers and there are no immediate concerns there. Praise God for that good news! The rumors are true, he is a trooper. He is surrounded by staff that is helpful and encouraging. They have made this whole process a little less stressful, kudos to Midland Hospital Oncology/Radiology Department. Most importantly he is surrounded by people who love him very much and he is feeling the love from the phone calls, notes and prayers from all of you. Thank you! - Steph

Memorial Day Party at the Woollard's 5/24/08

Mom and Dad always look forward to the annual Memorial Day Celebration with their great friends and neighbors . . .the Woollards.

It is heart-warming to know that they are able to enjoy great food and great company with their friends. Thank you Ed, Ruth & Family.

Dad had his 5th Radiation treatment today and briefly saw the Radiologist. Tomorrow, Dad will have his 6th Radiation treatment - plus his second Chemo treatment - he will have blood work done as well.

Dad is feeling pretty good - his current symptoms are: irritated throat, his chest is sore when he walks a distance (to the mailbox) - Dad was given two different prescriptions to help with the irritation to his throat.

Praises & Prayer Requests:

  • Dad started strong - please pray that he ends the treatment strong

  • Pray that side effects will be minimal and that his throat and esophagus will not get too irritated

  • Dad has been able to get outside to a few of Levi's ballgames, help the boys cut trees on Shawn & Becky's property and is working in the yard - pray that he is able to continue to do what he enjoys

  • On Week 4 or 5, a new CT Scan will be done to see if progress is made in shrinking the tumor - pray that treatment is successful - better yet ...... pray that the tumor is gone!!!

First Chemo and Radiation Treatment Completed

Dad is a trooper!!! He received his first Radiation treatment this morning which lasted 15 minutes - he will receive the Radiation every day of the week - Monday thru Friday (no treatment on Memorial Day). He will have morning treatments until next week, at which time it will switch to afternoons (beginning on Wednesday).

After Radiation, he went to Oncology for Chemo. He received an Antihistamine by mouth as well as by IV, a bag of Anti-Nausea medicine and 2 Chemo drugs: Taxol (Paclitaxel) and Carboplatin. The total Chemo treatment took approximately 3 hours to receive by IV - he will receive this one time per week. His next Chemo treatment will be on Wednesday - May 28.

PRAISES:
  • Cancer Services will be picking Dad up at the house and transporting him to and from his Radiation appointments 4 days each week. This is a huge blessing considering the price of gas!! This will only require them to drive to town one day per week - on Chemo/Radiation Day.
  • Dad did not have any allergic reactions today - his vital signs were very good and remained stable throughout the treatment - He feels good this evening.

PRAYER REQUEST:

  • Side Effects will be minimal
  • Dad's Health remains strong
  • Complete Healing of his lungs

First Appointment with the Radiation Oncologist

Dad at Levi's (Great-Grandson) Baseball Game -
Levi is playing first base in the background - #11
For the first time in Dad's life, he received a tatoo!! The tatoos mark the treatment area - three spots that are smaller than a freckle!! This is called Simulation. These tiny spots will be a guideline for Dr. Mehta's staff as they administer Radiation in an attempt to reduce the size of the tumor on Dad's left lung. The following are specifics regarding Dad's treatment plan:
  • Dad will return to the Radiation Oncologist on Monday, May 19 for more pre-treatment preparation.
  • Radiation Treatment will begin Tuesday, May 20 at 8:30 as follows...

- 20 minutes of Radiation - Every Day - 5 days a week - Monday thru Friday for 7 to 9 weeks

  • After the 4th or 5th week, a CT Scan will be repeated to see if the tumor has reduced in size
  • If the tumor shrinks, a return visit to Dr. Jones will be scheduled to see if he can surgically remove the tumor
  • Chemotherapy will be administered one time per week. This will be done at the same time as the Radiation. It will be administered by IV in Dr. Danso's Office (Oncologist). The first appointment is not yet scheduled - Dr. Danso's office should be contacting Dad tomorrow
  • Mom and Dad received a lot of reading material today regarding the treatments, possible side effects, a glossary of terms, nutrition and how to care for the area that is being treated

Dad is healthy - his vital signs were excellent today - his attitude is great and is ready to get moving on the treatment.

Specific Prayer Requests:

  • Side Effects will be minimal
  • Dad remains strong - is able to eat the proper foods to maintain good health
  • Spiritual Strength for Dad and the entire family as we look to God for our help in a time of need
  • Pray for a Miracle - this is large tumor - pray that God will remove the tumor from Dad's Lung

Second Opinion from Thoracic Surgeon Received

Dad had an appointment this afternoon with Dr. Robert N. Jones, a Thoracic Surgeon. After reviewing the CT Scan and PET-Scan, Dr. Jones feels that surgery is not an option. The following summarizes the conclusion from his review of the scans and his recommendations:

  • The tumor is large and involves the main blood supply to Dad's Lungs - Dr. Jones said Dad would not survive surgery. Not because of his emphysema but because of the size and location of the tumor.
  • Dr. Jones felt he could not remove the entire tumor which would put Dad in a worst position than what he is currently in - delaying treatment as he recovered from the surgery.
  • Dr. Jones also believes that after reviewing the CT-scan that more than one lymph node is involved which would increase the risk of the cancer spreading to other parts of his body.
  • Mom asked about the new "CYBERKNIFE" - a new non-invasive option for inoperable cancer - Dr. said this is not an option for Dad as it is not a cure for incurable cancer
  • Dr. Jones felt that the only alternative was to begin Radiation Therapy and Chemo
  • He told us NOT to look at the statistics for survival

We will be contacting Dr. Danso (Oncologist) in the morning to begin treatment.

Praises:

  • God is still in control
  • The cancer is only in his lungs and has not invaded other parts of his body
  • Dad is feeling pretty good right now - has a great attitude and is willing to fight this battle
  • Dad has been putting on some of the weight he lost earlier (he lost approx. 20 pounds since January)
Specific Prayer Requests:

  • Treatment can be started quickly and will be successful
  • Dad will have the air he need to breath each minute of every day
  • Dad will remain physically strong and will be able to tolerate the treatment
  • God will be glorified in this process
  • We still need a MIRACLE - Pray that God will remove the tumor!!
Lynette shared this picture and verse today.....

Matthew 18:20 - For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.

Does this count?????
